Limit on visit times due to smaller market size

The next three months, our usual indoor space will be split between the market and hockey players/equipment, so our space will be smaller.

Some of you might remember how crowded it was at the last market! To avoid that happening again, we will ask you to limit each visit to an hour, with some exceptions as below.

Since our average visitor only stays 15-20 minutes, an hour is more than sufficient time to fill your bag to the limit. (See limits below.) If after an hour it becomes quiet and you have not filled your bag yet, you're welcome to stay a little longer. Or you could leave when it is crowded and return later (nice coffee places in the area). We discourage anyone from staying at the market more than a couple of hours in total.

As always, at 3 o'clock, limits are off! After 3 pm you can take as much as you wish, extending your stay up to a total of 3 hours!

Before 3 pm limits are:
One  large shopping bag (or half shopping cart) per person;
Two large shopping bags (or one shopping cart) per family.

We rely on your goodwill. We also want to enjoy yourselves, so we're not counting minutes or anything. If at any time, we find it crowded and breaking fire safety regulations (and the market code of respect that allows *everyone* a chance to enjoy the goodies at the market) a volunteer will make an announcement, asking for those who have been at the market for about an hour (or the longest, if the market has not been open for an hour) to leave and return later if they wish.

RRFM Continues on Dec 3rd!

Dear Community Members,

We're quickly approaching the start to a new month, and we're happy to announce that we will be returning on Dec 3rd inside Campbell Park Community Centre on 225 Campbell Ave, North of Wallace Ave and South of Antler St.

For the next 3 months, our indoor space will be split between the market and hockey equipment, so our space will be smaller. To avoid the crowding that we experienced last Market, we ask you to limit each visit to 1 hour. If after an hour it becomes quiet and you have not filled your bag yet, you're welcome to stay a little longer. Or you could leave when it is crowded and return later. We discourage anyone from staying at the market more than a couple of hours in total.

FRIENDLY REMINDERS:
  • If you bring stuff, please make sure that everything you bring is clean and in working order.
  • There's a limit of 1 large sized IKEA bag for each individual; 2 bags for families of 3 or more people
  • After 3pm, you're welcome to take as much as you like
  • Each person is limited to 2 jewelry pieces. You can pick-up your jewellery tokens when you sign-in at the entrance

TRANSPORTERS
Anything remaining at the end of the Market will be donated to local charities. At this time, we're always looking for volunteer transporters to help deliver these items to various locations. So if you have a vehicle or bike, and can help, please contact us at rrfmarket@gmail.com for more details.

Feel free to reach out to us at rrfmarket@gmail.com or in-person at our next Market.

We look forward to seeing you at our next Market,

RRFM Team

The market continues indoors! Bring stuff that can become Christmas gifts!

With the weather getting a bit nippy, we have moved indoors to the Clubhouse again. If all goes well, and the volunteer commitment remains steady, we intend to continue through the winter.

When the hockey season starts it will affect the physical size of our market (December to April markets), so keep that in mind when you are trying to decide what kind of carrier to bring with you. Too many shopping carts can clog up a small area. We hope that only people with physical challenges will bring carts, and that the rest with suffice with backpacks or shopping bags.

Our market is run on volunteer power only!

Its continuation through all seasons is dependent on a solid base of volunteers, for organizing, for the day of the market, and for post-market driving leftovers to charities.

We are in need of more volunteers for our September 3rd market. Can you make it for a couple of hours, anytime between 8 am to 5 pm? -- We especially need more volunteers between 9:30 am to 2 pm. -- but if those hours do not work, we would really appreciate your help at set up and take down.

Volunteering at the Really Really Free Market is fun! You get to take lots of free stuff, too!

Please email rrfmarket@gmail.com if you're interested! Thank you.

New limit on shopping with a super-sturdy bag!

Some of you who came to the last market might remember our conversations about a new limit. Based on the positive feedback we received, as of July 2nd, 2016, we are changing the shopping limit to 1 (one) IKEA bag per person, and 2 (two) IKEA bags for whole family.

Which IKEA bag, I hear you ask! There are so many!
This one:

We expect that the smaller limit will encourage some people to be more restrained in their shopping, allowing everyone equal access to new items. Remember, a Really Really Free Market is all about sharing.

If you have one of these, or a small size shopping cart, we prefer you use those. If not, you can check in with us regarding the size of the shopping container you have brought with you.

Happy shopping!

June 4th Market Reflections

Thank you to everyone who made it out to our June 4th RRFM at Campbell Park!
We enjoyed our first market of the year outdoors, under a canopy of trees.  It was great to see so many new faces as well as returning ones!  Lots of interesting objects and clothes appeared throughout the day and most items found a new home by closing time. Yay!
You can check out some photos from our June market on our Facebook page.

Our next market will take place on July 2nd.  A **reminder** that we would like to begin our new ‘shopping’ guideline then. Thank you for helping us create and maintain community.

We are always looking for volunteers to help at the market and behind the scenes organizing it!  Please email rrfmarket@gmail.com if you are interested.

New Shopping Guideline

Dear market visitors,

The one-shopping cart per person limit we put in place last summer has been mostly very successful! A shopping cart-ful is often more than most of our visitors want from the market.  Unfortunately, this guideline has not worked for everyone and we’ve received complaints about "inconsiderate" and "greedy” shopping practices.

Beginning at our July Market, we are going to change the limit in hopes to remedy this situation. Presently we are thinking of providing each visitor with a large bag that they can fill up and return to us when they are finished at the market.

We welcome feedback (preferably constructive ones) on this matter.  Please also tell us why *you* come to the market. If you like to take more than a cartful of stuff, please tell us your reasons. We're listening!

You can reach out to us at rrfmarket@gmail.com or in-person at the June 4th market.

Thank you for your continuing efforts at community building!
With love,
Campbell Park RRFM Team

June 4th RRFM is around the corner!

Summer has finally arrived and we are looking forward to our next market on Saturday, June 4th, 10am–4pm, at Campbell Park. Weather permitting, we hope to enjoy a day of community exchange outdoors!

Please read the side panel of this blog to learn more about what a Really Really Free Market is, How It Works, and some Wish List items we are currently looking for.

In addition, here are a few friendly reminders:
- we cannot accept large items unless you leave your contact info and are available to pick them up at the end of the day if they are leftover
- you do not have to bring anything
- if you bring items, please do so before 3pm
- please remember the "shopping cart" guideline for collecting materials

We are always looking for new volunteers to assist with organizational and/or day-of market tasks. Feel free to email us at rrfmarket@gmail.com if you are interested or have any other questions about the market.

We hope to see you on June 4th!

Do you have a car? Would you like to volunteer with our community market for about half hour? If your answer is yes and yes, be a transport volunteer on May 7th!

Despite the large volume of stuff that moves through our market, somehow we always end up with more stuff than we started with! Visitors are allowed to take as much as they wish after 3 pm, but most visitors have already had their fill by then...

Usually leftover stuff is too much for other volunteers to transport to charities in their backpacks and bicycles, although they take as much as they can.

If you have a car or other similar motor vehicle, you could make a huge contribution to our monthly community event: We need transport volunteers to come by between 4:15 to 4:45 (or a bit later if more convenient), and take some of the leftovers (which we will box or bag) either to to a nearby charitable second-hand store that is a five-minute drive away and open on Saturday evenings, or to a charity, event, community space, or any other place of their own choice.

Are you that person?

Please e-mail us at rrfmarket@gmail.com if you are!

Our next market is Saturday, May 7th, and we are looking for end-of-market transport volunteers for that day.

Reflections on April 2nd RRFM

THANK YOU to everyone who supported our first RRFM Campbell Park of the 2016 season! It was a busy day for volunteers and market-goers (so busy, in fact, that we forgot to take photographs of the excitement).  We were delighted to see many returning faces and also to meet new members of our community.

Since winter decided to grace us with another week of chilly weather, we operated out of the clubhouse and onto the front patio this month.  People were certainly into spring cleaning mode in preparation for the market, as we had the pleasure of experiencing lots and lots of clothes and a variety of objects, from sports gear to vinyl records to kitchen and craft supplies, pass through the event. There seemed to be something for everyone!

We appreciate your continued effort to create and uphold community at the RRFM Campbell Park. It is a place of sharing, courtesy, giving space, and friendship.  We look forward to maintaining this spirit at our next market on May 7th.  Hope to see you then!

**If you are interested in volunteering (day-of market, organizational, transportation) with the RRFM Campbell Park, please send an email to rrfmarket@gmail.com.**

PS: You may have noticed a camera crew visiting us on Saturday. A few people from Fairchild Television Ltd. stopped by to experience the market and record a view words from some of our organizing volunteers.  Be sure to check out their weekly show, "City View" on Fairchild and Talent Vision TV. RRFM love to all! Ya!

A Call for Volunteers!

Are you interested in volunteering with the RRFM Campbell Park? We are always excited to meet new people who are enthusiastic about helping to build a community of free exchange!

Specifically, we are looking for day-of market volunteers (including transportation volunteers!) as well as organizational volunteers.

Please contact us at rrfmarket@gmail.com if you are interested. Thank you!

April 2nd RRFM

Welcome back to the RRFM Campbell Park!
Our first market of the 2016 season will take place on April 2nd, 10am–4pm.

If you haven't been to the RRFM before, we aim to create community by:
1. Giving space: Please respect each market-goers’ personal space and the physical space of the market.
2. Courtesy: Please take turns examining items.
3. Sharing: Competing for goods contradicts the market’s mission of sharing.
4. Friendship & community: We are here to have fun together!
5. Common sense: We cannot accept broken, torn or stained items.

A few (more) friendly reminders:
- you do not have to bring anything
- if you bring items, please do so before 3pm
- please remember the "shopping cart" guideline for collecting materials
- we cannot accept large items unless you leave your contact info and are available to pick them up at the end of the day if they are leftover

Feel free to email us at rrfmarket@gmail.com if you have any questions.

We hope to see you on April 2nd!
Thanks, and free market love to all!
